Bromelain: What A Pineapple Enzyme Can And Cannot Do

Ingredient EvidenceUpdated September 2026By The BreathiZen Team

Bromelain is the ingredient most often oversold on pages selling this product, so we will draw the line carefully.

It is a real enzyme with real properties. It is not a decongestant.

Bromelain is a group of enzymes from pineapple stem. It is included in BreathiZen to support the body's normal mucus handling — not to dissolve mucus, which is a claim the evidence does not support at supplement doses.

What bromelain is

Bromelain is a group of proteolytic (protein-digesting) enzymes extracted from pineapple stem. It is used commercially as a meat tenderiser and studied as a supplement, most seriously for post-surgical swelling and sinus inflammation. NCCIH has a short neutral page on it.

The mucus claim, examined

You will read that bromelain “dissolves mucus” or “breaks up congestion”. Here is the honest version: bromelain is a protein-digesting enzyme, and mucus contains proteins, so the idea is chemically plausible in a test tube. In a person, the enzyme is swallowed, largely digested itself, and never reaches airway mucus.

So our wording is deliberately narrower: bromelain is included to support the body's normal mucus handling. That is a supportive, systemic framing. If a page tells you a swallowed enzyme dissolves mucus in your lungs, it has skipped the route problem entirely.

The units nobody explains: GDU

Bromelain potency is measured in GDU (gelatin digesting units) per gram, not just milligrams. A high-GDU bromelain at a low milligram dose can out-perform a low-GDU one at a higher dose. Our label prints neither a bromelain milligram figure nor a GDU value, because the plants sit inside a 154 mg proprietary blend — and we would rather tell you that than let the omission pass unnoticed.

Two real cautions

  • Pineapple allergy. Bromelain comes from pineapple stem. If pineapple is a problem for you, this bottle is too
  • Clotting. Bromelain can affect platelet aggregation. With ginger in the same blend, two of our five plants touch the blood-thinner conversation — which is why that page exists
Key points
  • Proteolytic enzymes from pineapple stem
  • 'Dissolves mucus' fails on route, not chemistry
  • GDU is the real potency unit, not mg
  • Pineapple allergy and clotting are both real cautions

In one line. Bromelain is a pineapple-stem enzyme included to support normal mucus handling. Swallowed, it never reaches airway mucus — and GDU, not mg, is its real potency unit.
