Mullein is the headline plant in our formula and the one with the deepest traditional record. It is also the one where tradition and modern evidence are furthest apart, so this page separates them.
Start with the number on the label.
Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) is the plant with the longest traditional use for chest comfort in European herbalism. A 10:1 extract means ten parts raw leaf were concentrated into one part extract. Human clinical evidence remains limited.
What 10:1 actually means
A 10:1 extract means ten parts of raw leaf were processed down into one part of finished extract. It is a concentration ratio, not a potency guarantee: the ratio tells you about the manufacturing step, not about how much of any specific compound ends up in the bottle. A 10:1 extract from poor raw material is still a 10:1 extract.
It is a real quality signal that our label prints the ratio at all — many do not. It is not a substitute for a per-compound number, which our label does not print either. We cover that limitation in full here.
The traditional record
Mullein appears in European herbal texts for centuries, used as a leaf tea or tincture for chest comfort. That record is genuine and it is why the plant leads our blend. Traditional use establishes a history of human consumption and a plausible direction — it does not establish efficacy, and we will not dress it up as though it does.
What the modern evidence shows
Laboratory work has looked at mullein's saponins and mucilage, and the plant appears in ethnobotanical surveys worldwide. Well-controlled human trials for respiratory endpoints are scarce. The PubMed record is open — search it yourself and you will find what we found: interesting preclinical material, thin human data.
That is why the research-depth bar on our homepage puts mullein at 74 rather than 95. The number reflects volume of published work, not proof of benefit in this bottle.
Five plants, a few drops a day, and sixty days to decide.
Order BreathiZen — from $49What this means for your decision
If you want a supplement whose lead ingredient has decades of randomised controlled trials behind it for respiratory endpoints, mullein is not that ingredient and no mullein product is. If you want a plant with a long traditional record, a printed concentration ratio and a sixty-day guarantee to test it yourself, that is exactly what BreathiZen offers — described at the size the evidence supports.
- 10:1 = ten parts leaf into one part extract
- Ratio describes manufacturing, not potency
- Traditional record: centuries in European herbalism
- Human clinical trials: scarce
In one line. 10:1 is a concentration ratio, not a potency guarantee. Mullein's traditional record is deep; its human trial record is thin. We print both.
