Cordyceps Militaris: Five Human Studies And An Important Species Note

Ingredient EvidenceUpdated September 2026By The BreathiZen Team

Cordyceps is the plant on our label most likely to be confused with something else, so this page starts with the species.

The distinction is not pedantry — it changes what research applies.

Cordyceps militaris is a cultivated mushroom with roughly five human studies since 2017 covering around 321 participants — limited and inconsistent results. It is a different species from the wild-harvested cordyceps sinensis.

Militaris is not sinensis

Our label says Cordyceps militaris. That is a cultivated species grown on substrate. Cordyceps sinensis (now Ophiocordyceps sinensis) is the wild-harvested Himalayan caterpillar fungus — rare, expensive, and the subject of most of the older traditional literature.

They are different organisms with different compound profiles. When a page selling this product lists “cordyceps sinensis”, it is not describing what is on our label. That is one of the tells in our fake-seller checklist.

What the human research shows

Roughly five human studies since 2017, covering around 321 participants in total, have looked at cordyceps militaris — mostly for exercise performance and oxygen utilisation. The results are limited and inconsistent. That is a small evidence base by any standard, and it is why our homepage research-depth bar puts cordyceps at 44.

The PubMed record is short enough to skim in an evening.

Why it is in the blend

For the traditional association with stamina and steady breath on a climb — the Tibetan and Chinese record is genuine, and it is the reason the plant appears in respiratory formulas at all. We include it for that rationale and describe it at that size. What we will not do is quote a sinensis study and let you assume it applies to militaris.

A note on caffeine

Cordyceps is a mushroom, not a stimulant, and contains no caffeine. Some pages selling this product list green tea extract in the ingredient list — a caffeinated plant that is not on our label, sitting oddly beside their own “no stimulants” claim. Our label has five plants and none of them carries caffeine.

Key points
  • Militaris ≠ sinensis — different species
  • ~5 human studies, ~321 participants since 2017
  • Included for the traditional stamina rationale
  • Mushroom, not a stimulant — no caffeine

In one line. Cordyceps militaris is cultivated, has ~5 small human studies, and is a different species from sinensis. It contains no caffeine.
